Are goals the problem?
There are hundreds, quite possibly thousands, of books on goals. There is no shortage in that category. But is the problem focusing on the outcome rather than the journey, the process it takes to get there? Could focusing on the results be a distraction?
Nick Saban was recently asked about how he achieved success as a college head coach. His college win percentage was around 81%. His record was 297 wins and only 71 losses. He won a total of seven national championships. You would think his response would be that he focused on goals. His response, however, was that outcomes are a distraction; focus on the process that achieves the goal.
Maybe he understood one thing that many of us lose sight of: consistency. Consistency and diligence always win out. Once you are consistent, your outcome will come in due season. The fruit of all your hard work and refining will produce the harvest at its optimum time.
What can we LEARN from this? Process is the path to the goal; focus on the process.
How can you APPLY this in your life right now? You can write your goal down, but put that away immediately, and write down the steps you need to take daily to achieve that eventual outcome.
Lastly, what may you need to REFINE along the way? As you focus on the process, be flexible in tweaking your approach to create a better path toward your victory.
Goals are nice to have, but without a consistent process, no goal is achievable. Focus on the process, not the goal!
