Strong Men, Strong Homes, Strong Nations/What does it mean to Prosper?

It was April 15th, 2021, and my wife and I had made the deadline to file our taxes. I was ecstatic—I had earned well over six figures the previous year. But what happens when the best time of your life is also the most confusing? Something in my gut told me, This isn’t it. This is not the only way to prosperity.

I had been striving to make a sizable impact as an entrepreneur for years. With a wife and kids, I wanted to set a strong example for my family and others. But as I reflected on life, I knew something was missing.

My journey toward a better life truly began after my sister passed away in 2016. That was a dark time for me, to say the least. Yet, two years later, my daughter was born on that same day. I knew God was up to something I couldn’t fully explain.

The thirty pounds I had gained after my sister’s death—I was now losing. I was investing more effort into my family life, realizing that life wasn’t just about work. We attended church, but not as consistently or punctually as we should have in the years before COVID.

When I finally resolved to seek more, my instincts told me I wasn’t even close. To explain where I’m going with this, I want to share a passage from the Tony Evans Study Bible—Psalm 1:1-3:

Verse 1: How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers!
Verse 2: Instead, his delight is in the LORD's instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
Verse 3: He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.

That passage stood out because I realized that everything I had been doing lacked God. I didn’t have a prayer life unless something went wrong. The shows and music I consumed reflected that I wasn’t serious about living a blameless lifestyle—I was just a lukewarm believer.

Then I attended a Myron Golden conference, and for the first time, I understood that the Word of God is meant to transform our lives, not just be read.

Once I started looking inward, I realized what I was missing—total submission to God and His ways. I no longer wanted to be spiritually bankrupt. As I read the Bible, those three verses from Psalms showed me what true prosperity looks like.

The Four Keys to Prosperity
1) Do not listen to or follow ungodly advice. Reading the Bible and learning from sound biblical teaching is crucial for this.

2) Do not take pleasure in sin or anything that leads to it.

3) Avoid anything or anyone that mocks God. Run from it or them quickly.

4) Meditate on God’s Word throughout the day. I like to call it dwelling on His Word. Scripture provides a clear pathway to higher and brighter levels in life.

The best thing God ever did for me was to help me realize that money is not the source—He is. Money is important—it answers many things—but it cannot be my number one priority. True prosperity must involve God. Otherwise, all you have is worldly success—success that moths can eat away.
