Have you ever felt a calling for more? In your decision to become more for your future, have you started to feel isolated from some friends and family? Maybe the story of two caterpillars, Eric and John, may give you insight into why this is happening.

Eric and John were the best of friends in the backyards of Kansas. They loved eating plants and moving at their own slow pace. Things were going good for these two friends until John was eating grass one day and saw a beautiful multi-colored butterfly. John was so enamored that he stopped eating and just stood there thinking. The question that kept coming up in his mind was, Is this all that life has to offer me? Eric later came up to him and asked him what was wrong, and John said, Is there more to life than just walking and eating grass every day? Eric was confused. He told John, What else would you want to do in life? Let’s just keep doing the same comfortable things that we've been doing.

As the days went by, the desire to become more kept growing in John. Eric would try to convince him, Let’s keep things the same and get on with life, but John increasingly told him he had to discover who he was meant to become, even if it meant being uncomfortable. They slowly grew apart, and one day Eric couldn’t find John because John was now in a cocoon.

Several weeks went by, and Eric just went day to day, doing the same thing over and over. Then, all of a sudden, he heard someone shouting his name. Eric looked and looked but didn’t see anyone. Finally, a loud shout said, Up here! He saw a graceful, beautiful butterfly.

John, is that you? Yes, John said, as he flew away to new heights and horizons.
Eric suddenly stopped eating and asked himself one question: Is this all that life has to offer me?
